Rare Ebony Boulle Commode
At first glance, you might think this piece
is just a plain cupboard. But when you raise the lid on top, you will see a
metal interior with openings for dishes! This piece can come out, but is
slightly recessed inside so that dishes can be placed in the appropriate
openings. Small Bristol glass plates and a tiny drinking glass will fit in
the openings. (I will include a small Bristol compote and a dish). This is a
wonderful bedroom piece and is considered rare and unusual. The piece is
black with gold transfer work on the front and top of the piece. Two small
ivory knobs appear on the cupboard doors below. Inside is a shelf for
storage. The commode has four small turned feet and has numbers and letters
imprinted underneath to identify it as a Kestner piece of furniture. Also in
old script is written the word "bedroom".
