Extremely Rare Desk by
Gerhard Sohlke
This is a wonderful piece that is sought
after by advanced collectors. The writing surface of the desk has a
serpentine front with a green insertion that resembles a blotter. The
beautiful filigree cubbies are made of a soft metal, painted black which are
attached to the back wall and writing surface. A marvelous circular mirror
with soft metal decoration is mounted on the scalloped back wall. The desk
is supported by four curved metal legs that are painted in a dark asphaltum
wash. This desk is one of several pieces that make up a set that includes a
sofa, a pier mirror with the same metal legs, a set of 6 chairs with backs
that have open cut out work, and rectangular table with metal legs that has
gold and silver transfer work on top. (This complete set of furniture can be
seen in the September 2008 newsletter on this website) A slightly modified
version of this set can be seen at the Lyman Allyn Museum in New London, CT
