Rare and Unusual Ebony Etagere
This is a small scale étagère that has a most
unusual form that I have not seen before. The piece is all in black with
gold transfer work on all four half round shelves, including the top piece!
All of the transfer work is the same design of scrolls and vines with gold
borders on each piece. There is a long mirror on the back - all just in
perfect condition! Most impressive are the turned columns appearing on the
front corners. At the bottom of these posts or columns is a detailed foot
that looks like the foot of an animal. ( I have seen this same foot in
other pieces; e.g. on the base of a round stand with a dome on top.) On the
top of the étagère is some metal decoration that is finely scrolled and
which is set in holes. As you can see from the photos, half of the metal
scroll work is missing on the left side. What a shame as this piece is so
mint for its age. (early 19th century). It would be wonderful if a collector
has some trim work like this to place on the other side.

work on top) x 3-1/8" w.
