A Rare Fan with Ivory Handle

These early fans were used by women to keep the heat off them from a fireplace. Ladies in the early 1800s wore wax on their face as make-up and this would melt sitting in front of a fire going in the fireplace. Beautiful fans had been hand-painted and made for the ladies to carry with them. This particular fan has a cut out of a woman  glued in the center on a piece of silk fabric. On the reverse side is another piece of silk of birds and flowers in blue on a beige. A lovely ivory turned handle is holding the silk part of the fan. A nice accessory for an early parlor!
