Tynietoy Treasures [12]
The Mansion- we are now touring the blue painted bedroom set in the attic! I guess one is overwhelmed to see so many matching pieces.
We have the four poster pineapple bed ( often referred to as the French style bed), sewing tables (I believe there are two in the room) where
there is a drawer and then another drawer below pulls out and you see a sewing bag placed down in a hole, a dressing table and what looks
like a bench, but this is a stool. The bench is long and narrow on four legs. We see side chairs- one with a rush seat and one in plain wood and
then a rush seat rocker. Then we have a matching screen (amazing to see how it matches) and then to one’s real amazement, we see a blue blanket chest.
It’s one thing to find a blanket chest which is rare, but to find one to match the blue bedrooms set is unbelievable! Then we see a variety of
silhouettes on all three walls. The New England cradle in mahogany is out in front. I’d like to ask about the doll- my recollection is that only the wired,
handmade children were considered Tynietoy children. I have not seen a wooden Peggity child? Can anyone respond to this one?
We are still viewing the attic rooms and have now found the yellow painted bedroom set which features the Empire twin beds with a
matching dresser. If you look closely in the right corner, you will see a yellow folding screen too. A cozy area to sit and have a glass of wine
is off to the left where two black wing chairs are nicely decorated in pink roses. The round tilt top table provides a nice table to serve from and
accessories are conveniently placed for a guest. Accessories like a sweeper, a deck of cards on the table, a great porcelain wash set
on top of the dresser, a kitty cat seated on a chair, pictures and mirrors around the room makes this a special setting to see!
An Outstanding Dining Room in the Tynietoy Mansion- I have asked the owner to please send close up photos of this particular room and I now have them.
So we will explore more of the details in the weeks ahead. The architectural features in the room certainly impact the antiques that surround the room.
The lavish pediment over the doorway was only done on the first floor rooms and this one is to the far left and one would exit right near the
kitchen which is in the wing of the house. The other doors interconnect into other rooms. The first item that attracts your eye is the center table with six chairs!
Most collectors probably have not seen the “Gateleg Table” as it is one of the rarest pieces made by Tynietoy. I have collected photos of Tynietoy
for so many years and in one of my albums I have a photo of Herb Hosmer’s Gateleg table with the two Empire chairs with simulated cane seats in which
two of the chairs had the arms added! I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the same set! We will see a close up of this table next week. I am sure your
eye will go right to the back of the room to see the knife boxes done in the Japanned style along with the sideboard,
corner cupboard, tilt top table, the gorgeous folding screen and the Empire bureau. We are also going to make special note of the accessories in this room too.
The Tynietoy gateleg table shown in the photo above is a great opportunity to see the construction of the table.
It is an oval drop leaf table which is constructed with turned legs that form a rectangular shape beneath the center section.
Then the swinging leg that extends outward to support the leaf on the left and another swinging leg to support the leaf on the
right bring this table to its full size. Perhaps few gateleg tables were made due to the more complicated construction.
It certainly was a treat to see it up close and I thank the owner for sharing it with us.
This is a close up view of the right side of
the dining room in the Tynietoy
Mansion. The Japanned corner cupboard in black with gold decoration has a
beautiful coral painted interior to show the many small animals in bisque
and porcelain. The portrait of a young lady hangs over the Japanned chest
of drawers while a sconce and shade are placed on each side of the painting.
These German accessories were sold as Tynietoy accessories and blend in
nicely with the setting here. Some black and white decorative plates and
vases on top of the chest of drawers fits in nicely with the color scheme.
A Mount Vernon side chair with a blue painted seat has a circle of painted
flowers that certainly depicts this seat cover as a fine piece of
needlework. A handsome dining room with so many lovely pieces. Next time, we
will conclude our study of this room by seeing some unusual pottery that
resembles Omari.
